Kean University Skywalk and Cabin –
Skylands Campus, Oak Ridge, NJ

Frankoski Construction proudly delivered the Cabin and Skywalk at Kean University Skylands Campus, two interconnected structures that redefine the relationship between architecture and nature. Together, the form a transformative educational environment designed to immerse students in the natural work while meeting the demands of modern academic programming. Spanning 600 feet and rising to 60 feet above the forest floor, the Skywalk serves as a dramatic elevated pathway through the trees, connecting students to outdoor classrooms, observation platforms, and the upper level of the Cabin. The Cabin, a compact vertical academic building houses six classrooms across three floors, crowned by a rooftop observation deck that links directly to the Skywalk.

Project Complexity

•  Environmental Sensitivity: The site lies within the New Jersey Highlands, a protected region governed by strict environmental regulations, including limits on impervious surfaces. Frankoski Construction employed a minimal-impact design, using elevated piers and modular timber components to reduce ground disturbance. All materials and methods were selected to comply with the Highlands Water Protection and Planning Act.
  
  
• Topographical Challenges: The walkway had to traverse uneven terrain and dense forest canopy, requiring precise elevation planning and structural stability. Our team used advanced surveying and modeling tools to map the terrain and guide installation. Prefabricated sections were lifted and placed with minimal disruption to the landscape.
  
  
• Material Constraints: The project needed to balance durability, sustainability, and aesthetics without relying on heavy concrete or steel that could disrupt the natural setting. Frankoski sourced glue laminated Douglas Fir Timbers and Charred Western Red Cedar for structural aesthetic integrity. The materials offered strength, longevity, and visual harmony with the forest.

Offering students a “classroom in the trees”, the structures blend seamlessly into the forest, demonstrating how thoughtful design can enhance, not compete, with natural surroundings.
