Kean University - Skywalk Campus
Kean University’s Skylands campus is located on 40 acres of pristine forest in Oak Ridge, New Jersey. Frankoski was contracted to build both an elevated walkway and a new academic building, the Cabin.
Unlike anything else in New Jersey, the elevated walkway rises up to 35 feet above the ground and meanders through the forest along the treetops. The 600 foot long structure features 2 outdoor classrooms as well as observation points and provides unparalleled views of the campus and surrounding woodlands. The Cabin boasts floor to ceiling windows providing further opportunities to observe nature in its pure form.
The building is clad in charred western red cedar burnt in the Japanese style of “shou sugi ban”, while the interior is composed of polished concrete floors with woods ceilings marrying modern aesthetics with natural materials. Frankoski was honored to be part of this project which allowed us the opportunity to showcase the skills of our tradesman while partnering with University to create a unique centerpiece of their academic community.
